How to Play the Ghibli Scene Quiz

Game Overview

Each question begins with a strongly blurred scene image. The blur gradually clears over the 5- or 10-second reveal period selected in your settings. You do not need to wait until the image is fully clear: choose an answer as soon as you think you know which movie the scene comes from.

Regular questions use scene images officially released by Studio Ghibli. The quiz is based on visual recognition rather than traditional trivia, so backgrounds, architecture, landscapes, colors, vehicles, clothing, silhouettes, and overall composition can all help you identify the film.

There is no countdown that ends the question when the reveal period finishes. Your record is the combined time between the start of each question and the moment you choose an answer. If you answer every question correctly and record a competitive total time, you may qualify for the ranking for that rule set.

Start Screen & Settings

1. Check your current settings

Under the green Play button, the start screen shows your current rule set. You can confirm the number of questions, how long the scene takes to become clear, and whether Fake Images are enabled before you begin.

If you are happy with those settings, press the green Play 10 Questions, Play 50 Questions, or Play 100 Questions button to start immediately.

2. Change the rules before you play

Select Change Settings to open the settings screen. You can change four main options.

Your selected game settings are saved in the same browser, so the quiz will normally remember them the next time you return on that device and browser.

3. Check the ranking before starting

Select View Ranking on the start screen if you want to see existing records first. Rankings are separated by question count, 5- or 10-second reveal speed, and Fake Images on or off.

From the ranking screen, you can choose Challenge with This Rule to start a game using the exact rule set currently displayed.

4. Turn sound on or off

Use the speaker icon in the upper-right corner of the start screen to toggle sound effects. The selected sound state is saved in the same browser.

Playing the Quiz

1. A blurred scene appears

When a question starts, the scene appears in a blurred state after the image has finished preparing. At that point the question timer starts and the blur begins clearing. The thin progress indicator below the scene also shows the progress of the reveal.

After the selected 5 or 10 seconds, the image is fully clear. You can answer before then, during the reveal, or after it is clear.

2. Choose one of the three movie titles

Select the movie title you think matches the scene. The moment you choose an answer, the timer for that question stops and the scene becomes fully clear so you can check the result.

• Correct: your selected choice turns green and the correct movie title is confirmed.
• Correct fake image: the quiz confirms that the image is fake.
• Incorrect: your choice turns red and the correct answer is highlighted in green.

3. Follow your progress and total time

The top of the quiz shows your current question number, such as 1 / 10, along with overall progress and your accumulated answer time. The progress display updates as you move through the question set.

4. Exit a quiz in progress

Select Exit in the upper-left area of the quiz to open a confirmation dialog. Choose Continue to stay on the current question, or Exit Quiz to stop the run and return to the start screen.

5. Move to the next question

With Automatic selected, the next question begins automatically after you have had a short moment to see the result. On desktop, Button mode displays a Next Question button after each answer. On smartphones, Swipe mode lets you move on by swiping across the quiz screen after answering.

Results & Ranking

1. See your score and total time

After you answer the final question, the result screen shows your number of correct answers and your total recorded time. A perfect run is shown as a perfect score.

2. Ranking registration has conditions

To register a nickname in the ranking, you must first answer every question correctly. Your time is then compared with the ranking for the same rule set. If the result is fast enough to place within the available ranking positions, the result screen shows your projected position and a nickname field.

Rankings are kept separately for each combination of question count, 5- or 10-second reveal, and Fake Images on or off. For example, a 10-question / 5-second / Fake On run does not share a ranking with a 10-question / 10-second / Fake On run.

3. What you can do from the result screen

• Try Again: replay from the beginning with the same settings and a newly selected set of questions.
• Change Settings: open the settings screen and choose a different rule set before starting again.
• Share on X: open a post containing your score, elapsed time, reveal setting, and Fake Image setting.
• View Ranking: open the ranking for the current rule set.

Desktop & Mobile Controls

Playing on desktop

Choose answers with your mouse or other pointing device. If Button is selected under After Answering, a Next Question button appears after the result. If Automatic is selected, no additional input is needed to advance.

Playing on a smartphone

Tap one of the three choices to answer. If Swipe is selected, swipe across the quiz screen after answering to move to the next question. The swipe does not have to begin directly on the scene image.

On supported smartphone browsers, using the browser’s back gesture while you are inside the quiz, result, settings, or ranking screen returns you to the quiz start screen first. Using Back again from the start screen behaves like normal browser navigation.

Tips for Recognizing Ghibli Scenes

• Look beyond the characters: backgrounds, architecture, vehicles, clothing, objects, sky, plants, and other environmental details can identify a film even while faces are unclear.
• Use silhouettes and color palettes: before fine details appear, the placement of large shapes and the overall color scheme can help narrow the three choices.
• Answer as soon as you are confident: there is no time-out, but ranking performance depends on your accumulated answer time, so an early correct answer can improve your record.
• Do not assume every image is a real Ghibli scene: when Fake Images are enabled, recognizing that an image is fake is part of the challenge.
• Start with 10 questions if you are new: a short run makes it easier to learn the controls before trying 50- or 100-question challenges.

Troubleshooting

The question image does not appear

A temporary connection problem may prevent an image from loading. Check your internet connection and reload the page.

Buttons or settings do not respond

Make sure JavaScript is enabled. If you are using an older browser, update to a current version and try again.

The ranking does not load

If ranking data cannot be retrieved, you can still play the quiz. Wait a little and try opening the ranking screen again.

My settings are different from last time

Game and sound settings are stored in the browser. They may not carry over if browser storage is cleared, or if you use a different browser or device.
